Job Description

The Museum of Reclaimed Urban Space (MoRUS), a New York City living history museum dedicated to preserving and exhibiting the history of the East Village’s community gardens, homesteads, squats and other sites of grassroots activism and social change, seeks a dynamic Graphic Design Intern to support the organization through visual communications that are clear, attractive and memorable and which help convey the mission, identity and successes of the organization. He/she will develop graphic designs and layouts for print and electronic media, including print and e-newsletters, brochures, event invitations, advertisements, annual reports, and digital designs for the website, Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr and online ad campaigns. He/she will be able to maintain relationships with printers and work collaboratively with all programs and staff across the organization.

This internship can impact a student’s career path in profound ways. The Graphic Design Intern will obtain a 360 perspective on the inner workings of a small nonprofit museum; an opportunity to work in a culturally specific institution; real-life portfolio experience; and learning about the practical challenges of information hierarchy and graphic design within this context. The museum is launching in May 2012 and this will be a high-volume and exciting time in the Marketing & PR office. The Graphic Design intern may be called upon for supporting design projects as they arise related to the museum’s opening. Such experience would be valuable in gaining understanding of the needs and challenges of working on large-scale collaborative projects and how that translates into graphic language. This is a relatively new position within the museum, well-suited for someone with an entrepreneurial spirit.

Special Qualifications The Graphic Design Intern should be skilled in graphic design for both print and web and have expertise in using design software, including Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop and In Design. For web design purposes, he/she should know how to work with HTML and basic web programming scripts.

  • Excellent organizational, verbal and written, and the ability to write, copy edit and proofread materials.
  • Superior organizational skills; stickler for accuracy with great attention to detail and excellent follow-through.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
  • Must be a highly motivated, reliable, enthusiastic team player.
  • Familiarity with Internet research tools.

Time commitments are flexible and are guided by department needs. Internships are unpaid.
